A person’s ability to cook is essential to daily life. Trying different foods at home may be a lot of fun as a hobby or pleasure. However, navigating the kitchen can be a huge chore when vision impairment or blindness is involved.

Thanks to improvements in diagnostic techniques, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis has grown over time. Intervention is occasionally required for both children and adults with ASD. One intervention technique you can use to help kids with ASD is social tales.

Here are some suggestions on how to cook safely for persons who are blind or visually impaired so that vision loss need not spell the end of the culinary arts.

What Is Visual Impairment?

A person’s eyesight cannot be corrected to a “normal” level if they have vision impairment. Loss of visual acuity, which occurs when the eye cannot see objects as clearly as it once could, may contribute to vision impairment.

The loss of visual field, which prevents the eye from seeing as widely as it normally can without moving the eyes or the head, may also be the cause. This means that your eyesight is still poor despite corrective methods like glasses, contacts, or surgical options.

The International Classification of Diseases 11 (2018) classifies vision impairment into two groups, distance and near presenting vision impairment- WHO

List Of Cooking Tools For The Blind

  • Vision-impaired label makers.
  • Large-print items.
  • Use a barcode scanning app.
  • Items with raised markings.
  • “Talking” items.
  • Beeping items.

Tips For Safety Kitchen Precaution For Vision Impairment Or Blindness

  • Prepare your food on a lunch tray or serving tray. This is an easy way to contain messes.
  • If it’s easier, gather all your ingredients in one place before you begin.
  • Dress appropriately to prevent fires. Roll your sleeves up or wear short sleeves.
  • Wear oven mitts or potholders to avoid burning yourself when handling hot dishes.
  • A timer will assist in avoiding burning or overcooking.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure your food is cooked to a safe temperature.

Cooking On Stove

  • Before lighting the burner, set the pan on it.
  • Before removing the pan, turn the burner off.
  • Consider using pots and pans with heat-resistant handles.
  • To avoid accidentally bumping the handles while moving, turn them in. However, make sure the handle is not over a hot burner.

Food Preparation

  • If you can, avoid using a knife and use a vegetable peeler instead.
  • Before using your knife, make sure the sharp edge is downward.
  • For foods like sandwiches that are simple to slice, like pizza, use a pizza cutter rather than a knife.
  • To prevent spills, measure food over open containers or using additional measuring cups.
  • Put the ingredients in a bowl or container that is larger. Instead of attempting to pour the ingredients into the spoon or cup, you can now dip it into them.
  • When heating a liquid, measure how much you’ll need, and turn the heat on.

Quality of life is significantly impacted by vision impairment in adult populations. Adults with visual impairment frequently have lower labor force participation and productivity rates and higher rates of anxiety and depression.
