By October 2022, the typical household’s annual energy costs will increase from £1,971 to £3,549, reaching £5,000 by next April. In light of this, an expert has listed the top kitchen equipment “energy hogs” and explained how Britons might “save expenditures” by utilising them.
In light of the current energy crisis, it’s crucial to make every effort to limit your energy consumption to cut costs. There are many electrical devices in modern homes, and some of them can significantly affect energy costs.
An energy expert has provided their insights and top suggestions on reducing these costs for people unsure which kitchen appliances in their home are making the most significant contributions to their astronomical monthly bill.
Thomas Goodman of Myjobquote.co.uk, the UK’s premier trades matching service, revealed the top four “energy-guzzling” kitchen equipment that considerably boosts energy costs in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk.

Electric Ovens
“Electric ovens do take a lot of energy, which is why many people are now avoiding using them,” the expert stated. “Depending on how often you use it, an oven might cost between £60 and £400 to run annually.”
“However, there are alternatives to reduce costs, such as cleaning them without the pyrolytic function, which consumes a lot of power to operate.”
When it comes to cleaning, ovens are often overlooked, but a filthy range requires more energy to cook than a clean one.
Additionally, he advised households to “use other cooking gadgets like the microwave and air fryer would also lower your cooking expenditures.” The microwave is one of the most energy-efficient appliances due to its minimal energy consumption and short cooking periods. Microwaves don’t need to be preheated because of their small size, and they can heat food considerably more quickly than an oven.
American-Style Fridge-Freezers
Fridge freezers require constant power; therefore, they consume the most electricity of any kitchen item, but American-style models are the “worst,” according to Thomas.
“American-style fridge-freezers have a large volume and dispense water and ice cubes, both of which demand power,” he explained. This is why it is the most energy-efficient kitchen equipment.
“Rising energy prices mean that running this model of fridge-freezer costs just over £200 per year.” However, the expert pointed out that while typical free-standing fridge-freezers are less energy-hungry, an integrated model is superior and uses roughly half the energy of an American-style model.
Thomas added: “To find the most energy-efficient version, look for one rated as a B or C, which is equivalent to the old efficiency rating of A+++.”
Dishwashers
While using a dishwasher is convenient for completing chores, it is not without significant energy expenses. “Dishwashers are another energy-guzzling kitchen item that can account for up to 8% of your electricity cost,” Thomas noted.
“They cost between £50 and £200 a year to run, depending on the model and frequency of use.” According to the expert, those wanting to buy a new one should search for one with a high energy efficiency rating and minimal water consumption.
“To run it efficiently, only turn it on when it’s full, maintain the machine clean, and use a decent dishwashing soap to eliminate the need for rewashing,” Thomas added.
